In today’s world, many women wear makeup. It is used for many purposes, for fashion shows, for events, for movies, for Halloween and for many women, on an average daily basis. A lot of women wear makeup to enhance their beauty but some women wear makeup to hide simple flaws such as pimples, dark eye circles and blemishes.

Makeup, also known as cosmetics, first shows up in history a little more than 4,000 years ago when the Ancient Egyptian, Queen Nefertiti used eyeliner on a daily basis. The eyeliner was made of burned almonds, lead, copper, soot and many other ingredients. Makeup was believed to ward off evil spirits and also to improve eyesight. After that, Ancient Greeks and Romans started to use makeup which contained both white lead and mercury, also fragrances became very popular.

It was during the Victorian Era that makeup became less appealing and only actresses and prostitutes wore it. Through the Victorian Era, proper women did not allow sunlight to change their skin tone. Therefore, to change one’s skin tone through the use of makeup was completely unacceptable. Women of the Victorian Era towed around parasols, which allowed their skin to be kept from the sunlight.

Once the 1900’s came around, women began to take on an ill look that became very popular. Their cheeks of pink, their slips of crimson red and dark circles lied beneath their eyes. This look became so popular that many fashion models still wear it today. It was also through the 1900’s that media, television, transportation, and cinema pictures began to rise. With the rise of so many great things, makeup industries began to rise as well. It was in the early 1900’s that Max Factor, introduced that first perfumed face powder.

Through the 1930’s, women began to really take to the big screen and too look their very best, they used makeup. That is when cosmetic giants began to rise such as Revlon, Lancôme, Max Factor and Elizabeth Arden.

Throughout the years that followed, makeup became a part of daily life for all women, poor or wealthy. Makeup has become more advanced and with the exposure to a more environmentally safe world, makeup has even taken on a face lift. Environmentally safe formulas have been provided by makeup companies such as Dior and Clinique. Today, women want mineral and earthy formulas made environmentally safe and a lot of women will not wear anything that is not made 100 percent safe.

Makeup has always been a part of life, from the time it was made from the means of several different ingredients to the time it can be placed on a woman’s face through a technical advancement in the future. It will forever sell, because women are all about enhancing their beauty.
